Clyde Bookes
Clyde Bookes, an obvious
pseudonym, is believed by many to be Samuel Tyldsley. Stylistically,
this theory has merit. The two writers often resort to similar devices,
such as archaic pronouns. Bookes' subject matter is more concrete
than is Tyldsley's, but it is cerebral enough to warrant comparison to
Tyldsley. Both writers use the same unrhymed freeverse and, though
Bookes' writing seems more self conscious and earthy, both writers seem
to share a mood and an obsession with death alongside a contemplation of
life and its utility.
Since there is no
concrete biographical information available about Clyde Bookes, this theory
has, by default, gained momentum. Often, such as here, this theory
is passed on because one is obliged to comment about this author and there
is no contradictory evidence.
We can only guess
at Bookes' birthplace, education or personal statistics. He has no
publishing credits under his name, other than excerpts from "Nothing" which
have appeared in small periodicals in the late 1980's -1990's. The
manuscript was found in the private library with the Tyldsley manuscripts
and was part of the same donation.
