This second major
work of Samuel Tyldsley ( see Bibliography
in "The
Non-Works of Samuel Tyldsley" index) is a collection of bas-reliefs
and carvings which Tyldsley had been working on since before "Out
of Tune" was published in 1950.
We are uncertain where Tyldsley did
most of this work, but it seems obvious that the reliefs and accompanying
poems were inspired by the sea (as well as by Tyldsley's usual contemplations
about life and death). The manuscript is brief, probably owing to
the high expense of the graphic reproduction. We have attempted to
reproduce the work as faithfully as possible here, albeit without the leather
cover or gilded spine.
Due to the extravagance of this volume's
initial pressing, it was a limited, gift edition. Owing to Tyldsley's
increasing reputation and the quality of the work (Tyldsley's and the manufacturer's),
the book sold fairly well. In spite of this, the book did not have
any additional editions after the first and has never been reissued.
We present it now in this electronic form, recreated as closely as possible
using the original published version as a model.
The poetry is classic Tyldsley.
Heavily rhythmic free verse laced with ambiguities and subjectivity, it
is either vague gibberish or calculated chaos. For example, the tide
"roles" rather than "rolls". What part does it play? Does it
assign a role to the reader?
