THE NON-WORKS
of
SAMUEL TYLDSLEY
CHAPTER 7
On February 22, 1967 a missing person's report
was filed with the Boston Police Department, the subject of which was Samuel
F. Tyldsley. After Tyldsley's failure to attend or even acknowledge
appointments for several weeks previous, his publisher had become concerned
and contacted the authorities. This concern was apparently justified,
for Samuel Tyldsley was not seen again.
Though a search of Tyldsley's apartment yielded
no clues to his whereabouts, enough literary finds were made to inspire
several anthologies before 1972.15
At the time of their discovery, the following pages were thought unfit
for general publication by Tyldsley's publisher. However, because
the work was of great interest to scholars and admirers of Tyldsley,16
a typewritten copy was made and published under the name of Samuel Tyldsley.
This was a limited edition with an exclusive distribution to friends, associates
and certain literary institutions.
I am indebted to Mr. Lemster, the aforementioned
publisher, for the following original version of what is perhaps the last
work of Samuel Tyldsley. 17&
